Overview

The findings contained here have been taken from the Northern Territory Road Safety Taskforce Report 2006 - SAFER ROAD USE: A Territory Imperative.

The Taskforce was established by the Northern Territory Government in January 2006 to work out how to reduce the incidence of road crashes in the Northern Territory.

Your risk of being killed in a road crash in the Territory

In the Northern Territory, on average, one in every 400 Territorians will be killed or seriously injured on Territory roads this year. One person will die and nine will be seriously injured every week.

The following table is compiled from Australian Transport Safety Bureau data. It compares the number of people killed on average each year per 100 000 population, and shows that your risk of being killed on NT roads is about three times greater than anywhere else in Australia.

Australian comparisons

On a world scale, the statistics are no better. Your risk in the NT compared with other countries is shown in the following table from data extracted from a 2006 ATSB report.
